Roderick Williams is a fine operatic baritone who is a sought after singer in the opera houses of the world. More recently he has been building a reputation as a recitalist on the concert platform and very recently has been singing and recording Schubert’s great song cycle for the first time in English. As they stood in booklet form, they were a veritable encyclopedia of Schubert's lieder, but now, in book form, they take their place as one of the monuments of writings about music. Published by Yale University Press, Franz Schubert: The Complete Songs is a 3-volume, 3, page set, and is finally available, after many delays/5(22).
Franz Schubert’s song cycles Schone Mullerin and Winterreise are cornerstones of the genre. But as Richard Kramer argues in this book, Schubert envisioned many other songs as components of cyclical arrangements that were never published as such. By carefully studying Schubert’s original manuscripts, Kramer recovers some of these "distant cycles" and accounts for idiosyncrasies in the songs. And so is Hermann Prey’s rendition of all three of Franz Schubert’s song cycles: Die schöne Müllerin (), Winterreise (), and Schwanengesang (). These are considered the best Liederzyklus (song cycles) ever written. And this is the best version I’ve ever seen. The cycles were released individually in the mid-eighties on.
